Who We Are
The American Kurdish Committee (AKC), founded in 2023, is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. The AKC advocates for U.S. policies that protect Kurdish interests and further American national security.
Our Mission
Our mission is to raise awareness about our Kurdish allies and enhance the essential partnership between the Kurds and the United States.
Fighting For Change
Advocating for and protecting the Kurdish people is challenging due to several interconnected factors:
-
Oppressed Media and Restricted Narratives: Kurdish voices are often silenced by state-controlled media in countries like Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, limiting global awareness of their struggles. Independent Kurdish media faces censorship, shutdowns, or persecution, making it difficult to share their plight.
-
Tense Geopolitical Politics: The Kurdish population spans multiple countries with conflicting political agendas. Regional governments often view Kurdish aspirations for autonomy or independence as a threat, leading to suppression of their rights and efforts to divide the Kurdish cause.
-
Power Imbalances: The Kurds lack a unified state and the political or economic power to counter oppressive regimes. Their reliance on external allies, such as the U.S., is complicated by shifting international priorities and alliances.
-
Global Indifference and Fatigue: International governments and organizations often deprioritize Kurdish issues in favor of maintaining relationships with powerful regional players like Turkey, a NATO member, and Iraq, an oil-rich nation.
-
Ethnic Marginalization: Kurds face systemic discrimination, with limited access to education, economic opportunities, and political representation in many of the countries they inhabit. This marginalization hinders their ability to mobilize resources for advocacy.
-
Fragmentation Within Kurdish Communities: Internal divisions among Kurdish factions and parties weaken their collective voice and complicate efforts to present a unified front on the global stage.
These factors create a complex environment where advocating for Kurdish rights and protection requires navigating deeply entrenched political, social, and economic barriers.
